Bungan Beach, Sydney – NB36

Bungan Beach is a surf beach in the Northern Beaches of Sydney that is 600m long running between Bungan and Mona Vale Heads.

The beach is backed by steep vegetated slopes rising 40 m to the main Barrenjoey Road. Because of the steep slopes, beach access is restricted to a steep footpath at the northern end. You better be fit for the walk back up because trust me, it is very steep.

Bungan Beach has an interesting rock shelf which is accessible when the tide is low. This was the most incredible morning to photograph. When I turned up here with a couple of friends we could see well before sunrise that it was going to be something special.

There was a beautiful glow on the horizon 20 minutes before sunrise and we all couldn’t wait to see how spectacular this was going to be. I remember standing there, nearly knee deep in water holding an umbrella as it was drizzling with rain, just waiting foe the sky to colour up. Out of nowhere a lightning storm passed over head above us and out to sea just as the sun was rising . It was such an exhilarating moment, and one I will remember for a long time.
